The Roman Emperor Who Screamed Inside His Tomb

✦   ✦   ✦

In 491 AD, Zeno, ruler of the Byzantine Empire, supposedly suffered one of the most horrifying deaths in royal history. According to later Byzantine legends, he was mistakenly declared dead, sealed inside a sarcophagus, and buried alive while cries for help echoed from inside the tomb. Whether true or not, the story survived for centuries as a symbol of the paranoia and brutality of Byzantine court politics.
